Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, July 22, refuted reports circulating on social media suggesting that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states.
Responding to concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) during plenary, Akpabio clarified that although the Constitution Review Committee has received numerous proposals, none has advanced beyond the initial stages.
“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation,” he said. “The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance.”

He cautioned communities against holding meetings or mobilising in support of any proposed state, emphasising that no such approval has been given by the Senate.
Akpabio urged the public to disregard unofficial reports and rely solely on verified communications from the National Assembly regarding constitutional amendments or the creation of new states.
In a related development, the Senate gave the green light to President Bola Tinubu’s request to borrow over $21 billion for the 2025–2026 fiscal period.
