Akwa Ibom State is set to host the first-ever Niger Delta Sports Festival, an event aimed at fostering unity and showcasing sporting talent across the region.
Governor Umo Eno affirmed the state’s readiness during a meeting on Friday with a delegation from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), led by its Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, in Uyo.
Expressing gratitude for the selection of Akwa Ibom as the host, Eno described sports as a unifying force that strengthens relationships among the Niger Delta states.
He assured the delegation that the state would establish a working team to collaborate with the NDDC in organizing a seamless and successful festival.
“The festival is not just about competition; it’s about bringing our people together, discovering new talent, and stimulating economic growth,” Eno stated.
Dr. Ogbuku emphasized that the festival aligns with the NDDC’s commitment to regional development beyond infrastructure, adding that sports have the power to unify and inspire communities.
He revealed that the event, scheduled for April 1–8, would mark the commission’s 25th anniversary.

He also highlighted the factors that led to Akwa Ibom’s selection as the host state, including its modern sports infrastructure and conducive environment.
The Goodwill Akpabio International Stadium will serve as the festival’s main venue.
“With 20 sporting events lined up, this festival will bring together athletes, sports enthusiasts, and stakeholders from all nine states of the region,” Ogbuku said.
As preparations intensify, expectations are high that the festival will not only promote sports excellence but also enhance regional collaboration and economic activities in Akwa Ibom.
