The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has lauded the Chairman and Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), describing him as a consistent performer whose legacies continue to impact Nigeria.
Speaking on Friday during a courtesy visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, Owoade highlighted Marwa’s pioneering role in introducing the popular commercial tricycle, popularly known as ‘Keke Marwa,’ during his tenure as military governor of Lagos State from 1996 to 1999.
“We are proud of you. Your being in this position is not by chance; it is because of your devotion and commitment. Another thing I can’t forget is the legacy of ‘Keke Marwa’ that you brought to Nigeria,” the Alaafin said, according to a statement by NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi.
Responding to Marwa’s call for greater involvement of traditional institutions in combating substance abuse, the Alaafin pledged full collaboration. “Traditional rulers, being closest to the grassroots, are well positioned to support the fight. We are more than ready to work with you and give you all necessary support. Anytime you need us, we will always be there,” he stated.

Earlier, Marwa congratulated the Alaafin on his ascension to the throne and urged traditional rulers nationwide to leverage their influence to curb drug abuse within their communities. He cited the 2018 national survey indicating that nearly 15 million Nigerians aged 15 to 64 use drugs.
Marwa emphasized that the NDLEA, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive, remains committed to intensifying efforts against illicit drugs through arrests, prosecution of traffickers, and asset seizures. He further urged traditional and religious leaders to strengthen advocacy and provide intelligence to help tackle drug-related criminal activities.
“If we are able to control drug use, criminality will come down because kidnappers, insurgents, terrorists, and bandits use drugs to charge themselves,” he said.
