Algeria and Morocco have become the first two African countries to secure places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The North African teams earned their tickets after progressing to the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), following victories in their respective quarter-final matches.
Algeria made history by securing their first-ever Women’s World Cup qualification, overturning an early deficit to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1.
Morocco also booked their place at the global tournament with a 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa.
Under the qualification rules, the four teams that reach the WAFCON semi-finals automatically qualify for the 2027 World Cup.
The remaining two automatic qualification spots will be decided on Sunday when Cameroon take on Nigeria and Malawi face Ghana in the other quarter-final fixtures.
Meanwhile, Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa still have a route to the tournament through the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.
The two defeated quarter-finalists will face each other in a play-off on August 13, with the winner earning a World Cup place alongside one of the other two losing quarter-finalists.
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil.
