Amnesty International Slams Authorities as Boko Haram Kills 10 Vigilantes in Adamawa

Amnesty International has condemned the Nigerian authorities following the killing of 10 vigilantes by suspected Boko Haram fighters in Kwapre village, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The global human rights group, reacting on its official X handle on Sunday, described the latest attack as “vicious, unlawful, and a contemptible disregard for human life,” urging the Nigerian government to do more to protect civilians and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The assault, which occurred late Saturday, April 26, saw heavily armed insurgents ambush a group of local hunters and Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) members defending the community. Reports indicate the attackers overwhelmed the vigilantes with superior numbers and firepower.

“We lost 10 brave men, and others are fighting for their lives at FMC Hong,” said Hyella Anthony, a former councillor of Garaha Ward and an indigene of Kwapre. He confirmed that several injured defenders are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Hong.

District Head of Dugwaba, Simon Yakubu, expressed deep frustration, stating that this was the fifth attack on Kwapre and surrounding villages in just two weeks. “Our people are left helpless against the relentless raids,” Yakubu lamented.

The night-time assault, carried out with brutal precision, has once again highlighted the vulnerability of communities in the Adamawa-Borno border region, despite repeated calls for enhanced security.

Amnesty International stressed that the Nigerian authorities must act swiftly, noting that the protection of civilian lives is not just a legal obligation but a moral duty.

As Boko Haram’s attacks intensify, local leaders are pleading for urgent government intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
