Newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, has pledged to restore integrity, transparency, and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system as he officially assumed office on Thursday, October 23.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja, shortly after being sworn in by President Bola Tinubu, Professor Amupitan said his administration would be guided by “the highest standard of integrity, transparency, and discipline.”
He described his appointment as a profound responsibility and assured Nigerians that the Commission would work tirelessly to ensure credible elections across the country.
“The eyes of the nation are upon us, and it is our duty to rise to that occasion,” he said. “The Anambra election will be a pivotal opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to free, fair, and credible elections.”
Professor Amupitan also emphasised the need for unity and collaboration within INEC, urging staff to foster teamwork and open communication.

“Let us break down silos, foster open communications, and create an environment where every voice is heard and valued,” he stated.
He further assured that staff welfare would remain a key focus of his leadership, noting that an effective and motivated workforce was essential to achieving the Commission’s goals.
“It’s a priority because we are going to expect so much from you. So, we need also to be so honest to meet your expectations,” he added.
Concluding his remarks, Amupitan reaffirmed his confidence in the Commission’s capacity to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
“Together, let us uphold the values of democracy and work tirelessly to create legitimacy of our elections,” he declared.
