Anambra Fixes Soludo’s Swearing-In, Okays ₦604m For Key Projects

The Anambra State Executive Council has approved contracts worth about ₦604 million for road and key infrastructural projects across the state, as part of efforts to drive social cohesion, economic growth and improve residents’ living standards.

The approvals were granted at the council’s second meeting of 2026 held on March 2 at the Light House, Awka.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Law Mefor, said the council also approved activities lined up for the second-term swearing-in of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim.

According to him, three major events have been scheduled: an interdenominational church service on March 15; the swearing-in ceremony on March 17; and a thanksgiving service on March 22. Subcommittees have also been constituted to ensure smooth execution of the programmes.

Mefor said the council evaluated and welcomed the sentencing of Anambra-based native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as “Akwa Ọkụkụ Tiwara Akị,” and approved the destruction of his shrine and “Oke Ite” pots as part of measures aimed at moral and social rebirth in the state.

He noted that the council reaffirmed the Igbo philosophy that hard work leads to prosperity as a foundation for the state’s moral reorientation drive.

The council further resolved that Ekwueme Square in Awka would henceforth be reserved strictly for government functions and no longer available for private events. It directed that the Multipurpose Arena at the Awka Township Stadium should be used for private ceremonies previously hosted at the square.

Among the approved projects is the release of ₦164.39 million as cost overrun for the construction of an IAAF-standard five-lane track and natural grass pitch at the Ekwulobia Stadium Complex, awarded to Phimax Global Enterprises Ltd.

The council also approved ₦72.63 million for road marking and installation of thermoplastic speed bumps along the 10.043-kilometre Afor Nkpor–Eke Obosi Road.

Additionally, ₦121.95 million was approved for the supply and installation of ten 40-foot containers across multiple locations as temporary accommodation for security personnel, awarded to Achufusi Ventures.

For infrastructure at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Awka, ₦172.19 million was approved for asphalt surfacing of the internal dual carriage driveway, while ₦175.39 million was approved for asphalt surfacing of the service lane leading to the State House of Assembly and the High Court Complex.

The approvals follow an earlier decision of the council at its first meeting of 2026, where contracts reportedly worth about ₦16.7 billion were awarded for road, electricity and other infrastructural projects.

Meanwhile, the state government, through the Ministry of Environment and the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade, has commenced enforcement of standards for road setbacks on newly constructed dual carriageways.
