Anthony Joshua’s Driver in Custody as Police Probe Deadly SUV Crash

Police have taken into custody the driver of heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua following a fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two members of the boxer’s team.

The crash occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when the SUV conveying Joshua and his entourage collided with a stationary truck.

Preliminary findings by investigators indicate the vehicle may have been travelling at high speed before suffering a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control.

The driver, who sustained injuries in the accident, was initially admitted for medical treatment.

Police confirmed he was discharged from hospital and formally taken into custody on December 31, 2025, the same day authorities publicly announced that he was under investigation and could face prosecution.

Confirming the development, Lagos State Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said the driver is cooperating with investigators as detectives determine whether charges of reckless or dangerous driving will be filed.

Two of Joshua’s associates, his strength coach, Sina Ghami, and trainer, Latif “Latz” Ayodele, died at the scene.

The case has drawn public attention due to Joshua’s profile and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety laws on Nigeria’s major highways.
