APC Chieftain Alleges Exploitation of Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention for Profit

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and prominent social media commentator, Joe Igbokwe, has alleged that some individuals are exploiting the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public.

Kanu was, on November 20, 2025, sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja after being convicted on seven counts of terrorism-related offences. Following the judgment, he was transferred to Sokoto prison to serve his sentence.

Since his conviction, there has been sustained agitation for his release, particularly across the South-East, where supporters and sympathisers continue to describe his incarceration as unjust.

However, in a Facebook post on Monday night, Igbokwe claimed that the agitation has become a money-making venture for some individuals. He alleged that certain IPOB members, lawyers, and content creators are capitalising on the situation for personal gain.

“I have noticed that some unrepentant scammers in Igboland, IPOB fraudsters and some charge and bail lawyers are using the detention of Nnamdi Kanu to cash out,” Igbokwe wrote. “It has become a business. Even content creators are not left out.”

While Igbokwe did not provide specific names or evidence to support the allegations, his comments have sparked renewed debate online about the activities surrounding the campaign for Kanu’s release and the integrity of those involved.

Neither IPOB nor legal representatives associated with Kanu have officially responded to the claims as of the time of filing this report.
