Assault on President: NLC Declares Nationwide Strike

In a significant development, the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have officially initiated a nationwide strike from midnight today.

The decision stems from the violent incident that occurred in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, where NLC President Joe Ajaero and other leaders were assaulted. The assault, carried out by suspected state agents and security operatives, involved the destruction of vehicles, injuries, and the confiscation of personal belongings, including mobile phones, money, and ATM cards.

The attack unfolded at the NLC State secretariat, where leaders had gathered to kickstart a scheduled protest addressing a range of labor issues, including unpaid salaries and allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.

The NLC and TUC had previously issued a resolution on November 7, indicating their intent to launch a nationwide strike by November 14 if their demands were not met.

The brutality inflicted on Ajaero and his counterparts has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation both within the country and internationally. The labor leaders’ commitment to their cause remains resolute, emphasizing the urgency of addressing not only the targeted assault but also the broader labor concerns in Imo State.

As the nationwide strike takes effect, it is expected to significantly impact various sectors, potentially leading to disruptions in services and operations.

The unions stand united in their pursuit of justice for the assaulted leaders and resolution of the underlying labor issues.

Observers are closely monitoring the situation for developments and potential negotiations between the unions and relevant authorities.
