ASUU: Protesting students blocked Lagos Airport Road Monday

University students protesting the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ seven-month strike on Monday morning shut down a portion of the entry route to Lagos’ Murtala Muhammad International Airport.

As a result, traffic along the axis became very serious for both motorist trying to enter and those exiting the airport.

Police was sent to the scene, according to Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command.

Police officers were present at the demonstration site, Giwa Temitope, the National Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students said.

He said they were there to keep them safe, adding that no one was harassed.

Temitope vowed that the students won’t stop protesting, stating that it has come to the level of ‘No retreat, no surrender’.

In an effort to emphasize their demand that the ASUU strike be called off, NANS members earlier threatened to halt operations at local and international airports across the nation starting Monday.

Last week, the Ibadan-Ife Road and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were both closed by the protesting students.

Since ASUU began its strike on February 14th, all public universities in the nation have been closed for seven months.

Since then, negotiations between the Federal Government and ASUU on the strike have broken down due to accusations from both sides.

As the days passed, the likelihood of an agreement became less likely, therefore, the Federal Government brought ASUU before the National Industrial Court.

The matter was postponed till September 21, 2022, by the judge presiding over the case.
