The Bauchi Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has faulted the governments of Gombe and Plateau states for failing to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement, warning that continued delay could trigger fresh industrial unrest in the affected universities.
The union raised the concern on Thursday during a press conference at Gombe State University, where its Bauchi Zonal Coordinator, Timothy-Aku Namo, decried what he described as the worsening welfare of lecturers in the two institutions.
Namo recalled that the agreement was signed on December 23, 2025, following negotiations involving the Federal Government, state governments that own public universities and ASUU.
He, however, said Gombe State University and Plateau State University had yet to implement its provisions.
He explained that although the Federal Government had released funds for the salary component of the agreement and constituted an Implementation Monitoring Committee, many state governments were yet to fulfil their obligations, with some insisting that the agreement was between only the Federal Government and ASUU.

The ASUU coordinator also disclosed that a forensic audit conducted by the union’s National Executive Council on June 21, 2026, revealed that only Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State and Ekiti State University had implemented the agreement among the state-owned universities reviewed.
According to him, the findings showed that other state governments were unwilling to implement the agreement, adding that Gombe State University and Plateau State University had become major flashpoints in the implementation crisis.
Namo further said the two universities were not only yet to implement the agreement but were also grappling with other unresolved issues affecting staff welfare and industrial harmony.
He appealed to the Visitors of the two institutions to intervene before the situation deteriorates, warning, “We call on the Visitors to Gombe State University and Plateau State University to direct the immediate implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address all other lingering issues, or risk industrial disharmony.”
He also urged parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders, the media and other stakeholders to prevail on the Gombe and Plateau state governments to act without further delay.
“We call on all well-meaning Nigerians, especially parents, traditional rulers, the clergy, the media and other stakeholders, to appeal to the Gombe and Plateau state governments to make hay while the sun shines,” he added.
