Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has alleged that there are fresh moves to stop the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from participating in the 2027 general election.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, June 29, 2026, by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku claimed that political and legal measures were being deployed to frustrate the opposition party ahead of the 2027 polls.
He alleged that the ADC had become the target because it posed a credible challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), questioning why the governing party would be concerned if it was confident of its electoral strength.
The former vice president further alleged that court actions, administrative measures and political pressure were being used to weaken the opposition, while accusing the government of paying more attention to politics than to the country’s economic and security challenges.

Atiku warned that any attempt to prevent the ADC from contesting the 2027 general election would undermine Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that no government has the constitutional authority to decide which political parties Nigerians are free to support.
“The ballot is sacred, and every attempt to tamper with it is an attack on the Republic itself. The desire for change cannot be outlawed. Hope cannot be deregistered. Democracy cannot be subverted by administrative fiat,” he said.
He called on the judiciary to remain independent and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, civil society organizations and the international community to closely monitor developments ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku maintained that intimidation, judicial manipulation or political pressure would not deter those who had embraced the ADC as a platform for political change.
As of Monday, June 29, 2026, neither the APC nor INEC had publicly responded to the allegations.
