Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the rising wave of killings across the country, warning that Nigeria is facing an “epidemic level” of insecurity while accusing the Tinubu-led government of being aloof and in denial.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Atiku described the massacre of worshippers in Katsina as an assault on the nation’s collective humanity.
“The wanton killings of innocent Nigerians have reached the epidemic level. Only on Tuesday, in Katsina, at least 27 innocent worshippers were massacred inside a mosque by marauding bandits during morning prayers. This attack was not just against a community; it was an assault on our collective humanity,” Atiku wrote.
He lamented that killings are no longer isolated cases but have become a daily reality for many Nigerians, particularly in the North.
“Villages are being sacked, highways are unsafe, and even sacred places of worship are not spared,” he said.
The 2023 PDP presidential candidate accused the government of being detached from the suffering of citizens.

“Yet, the current government continues to operate as if nothing is wrong, remaining detached from the anguish of ordinary Nigerians. The government is aloof and in denial of the worsening security situation,” Atiku added.
He urged urgent action, insisting that protecting lives and property must become the government’s foremost responsibility.
“It is about high time that the protection of the lives and properties of the average citizen became a primary responsibility of government,” he stressed.
Atiku’s statement comes barely 24 hours after armed men stormed a mosque in Unguwar Mantau, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing at least 27 worshippers during early morning prayers.
The incident has further fueled concerns over worsening insecurity across Nigeria.
