Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has thrown his weight behind Ushie Uguamaye, widely known as Raye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who alleged she received threats after a video she shared online criticising President Bola Tinubu’s administration went viral.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, March 16, Atiku commended Raye’s bravery, portraying her as a representative of young women actively engaging in politics and advocating for democratic values.
“Raye embodies the spirit of a new generation of women who champion the ideals of popular participation and unwavering advocacy in the political sphere.
“I deeply admire her boldness and wisdom—her fearless resolve to speak truth to power, undeterred by the weight of opposition,” Atiku wrote.
Drawing parallels between Raye and legendary female activists like Gambo Sawaba, Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, and Margaret Ekpo, Atiku noted that she follows in the footsteps of those who shaped Nigeria’s political landscape.

He insisted that instead of facing threats, she should be supported for her activism.
“Rather than being met with hostility, Raye deserves encouragement and support. She is a shining emblem of the Nigerian youth—a testament to the long-held promise that the leaders of tomorrow are already among us, ready to shape a better future,” Atiku said.
Raye, currently serving in Lagos, became the subject of widespread discussion after posting a video in which she voiced her frustration over the country’s economic struggles.
She criticised Tinubu’s leadership, calling him a “terrible leader,” and expressed concern that hard work no longer guarantees financial stability in Nigeria.
Following the video’s widespread circulation, she claimed that some NYSC officials pressured her to delete it and that she had received threats.
There has been no official response from the authorities regarding her allegations.
