Atiku May Pick South-East Running Mate To Counter Obi’s Influence — Sambo

Arise News Politics Editor and public affairs analyst, Sumner Sambo, has suggested that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is likely to choose his running mate from the South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sambo made the remark on Monday, June 1, during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he discussed political realignments following recent party primaries.

He said emerging political signals point towards a South-East vice-presidential pick for Atiku, noting that the region has historically played a key role in his electoral strategy.

“The indicators around Atiku’s running mate suggest he’s likely to choose the South-East. The South-East has always been his political base in the South.

“In 2019 he picked Peter Obi, and in 2023 he picked Okowa. His move to the South-East may be aimed at reducing Peter Obi’s influence in the region,” he said.

The analyst argued that such a decision would be consistent with Atiku’s previous election strategies, which often involved balancing regional political interests to strengthen his national appeal.

It would be recalled that the ADC recently confirmed Atiku as its presidential candidate after he defeated former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, in the party’s primaries.

The development continues to generate political conversations about possible alliances and strategic choices ahead of the 2027 elections.
