Atiku, Tambuwal, Malami rally behind ADC coalition to ‘rescue democracy’

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed his commitment to defending the rights of Nigerians, insisting that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition will not relent in its push against what he described as anti-democratic tendencies under the Tinubu-led administration.

Atiku stated this on Monday during separate meetings with Senator Aminu Tambuwal, representing Sokoto South, and former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

In a post shared on X, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said opposition leaders are determined to “rescue Nigeria’s democracy from the grip of dictatorship.”

“We will be unrelenting in defending the rights of every Nigerian being harassed by anti-democratic forces of the Tinubu-led APC administration,” he wrote.

“The coalition that we are pushing is aimed at rescuing our democracy from the stranglehold of this emerging dictatorship. We shall be deliberate in joining hands in saving our democracy.”

Atiku had earlier, on September 5, raised alarm over what he described as growing signs of authoritarianism, citing incidents in Kaduna, Katsina, and other states.

According to him, the police invitations to former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai and ADC leaders, the attack on Malami’s convoy, as well as the disruption of a Katsina Elders Forum meeting on security reforms, were clear indicators of political intimidation.

The ADC coalition, which Atiku says is gaining traction among opposition leaders, is positioning itself as a force against President Bola Tinubu’s government.
