Aviation Workers Strike Suspended After Govt–Union Agreement

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, says the planned shutdown of the nation’s aviation sector by workers has been put on hold.

In a post on his official account on Sunday, the 10th of August, 2025, Keyamo confirmed that the industrial action, earlier scheduled to begin on Monday, the 11th of August, had been suspended.

The suspension follows an agreement reached between the government and aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUCPTRE).

The unions had, in a joint statement dated the 8th of August, 2025, announced plans to withdraw their services over demands for better pay.

Keyamo explained that after his intervention, the groups issued another joint statement calling off the strike to allow further engagement with the government.

“We are happy to announce that, after our intervention, the planned strike by the Aviation Unions due to commence tomorrow has been shelved,” he said.

He added that his longstanding relationship with labour leaders would help in addressing their grievances.

“Given my long relationship with labour unions, I have continued to work with our comrades to find lasting solutions to issues that have been pending in the sector long before we came to office, and by showing absolute good faith, the issues would be resolved one by one,” Keyamo stated.
