Ayra Starr Sets the Record Straight: My Journey Isn’t a Contest with Tyla

Nigerian artist Ayra Starr has spoken out about the comparisons drawn between her and South African singer Tyla.

The two musicians found themselves in the spotlight after receiving nominations in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Awards, where Tyla ultimately took home the award, surpassing Ayra Starr and several other Nigerian nominees.

In her first comments on the matter during an interview with BBC Radio 1 Xtra, Ayra Starr emphasized that the comparisons do not impact her friendship with Tyla.

She affectionately referred to the South African star as her “home girl” and her “G.”

“Tyla is my homegirl, that’s my G. That doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t care about all of that. Less noise, more music. Let’s support each other, like, why not, like afrobeats and African music is about to take over the world and we have to come together to be able to do that. There’s no need for
comparisons,” she said.
