The Niger State Government has commenced the construction of a permanent National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Paiko, with the first phase scheduled for completion within 12 months.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago announced the timeline on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, during the groundbreaking ceremony, saying funds had already been provided for the project and directing the contractor to meet the delivery deadline.
Bago said the facility would improve the welfare and training conditions of corps members, expressing confidence that it would rank among the best NYSC orientation camps in Nigeria.
He commended the Paiko community for providing eight hectares of land for the project, describing the gesture as a major contribution to youth development and national integration.

NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, described the project as a significant milestone, saying it demonstrated Niger State’s commitment to strengthening the scheme and supporting young Nigerians.
Nafiu said the new camp would replace an aging and challenging orientation facility, providing corps members with modern accommodation, improved security and a more conducive environment for the three-week orientation programme.
He praised the state government for its continued support for the NYSC and noted that Niger had joined Lagos, Adamawa and Gombe states in developing improved orientation facilities.
The proposed camp, designed to accommodate thousands of corps members, will feature hostels, administrative buildings, a multipurpose hall, healthcare facilities, recreational spaces and other essential infrastructure.
The project adds to ongoing efforts by states to modernize NYSC facilities nationwide as the scheme continues to serve as a platform for national integration, discipline and patriotism since its establishment in 1973.
