Bauchi Police Probe Death Of 20-Year-Old After Alleged Assault In Custody

The Bauchi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 20-year-old man, Abdullahi Adamu, following allegations that he was assaulted by police officers during interrogation in Misau Local Government Area.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, saying the police became aware of reports circulating on social media alleging that operatives attached to a police outpost under the Misau Division assaulted the deceased while questioning him over a case under investigation.

According to the statement, Adamu, a resident of Sebore Village in Hardawa District, was first taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Misau, for treatment before he was referred to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where he died while receiving medical care on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, said the Command remains committed to professionalism, respect for human rights and adherence to due process in the discharge of its duties.

He disclosed that he had ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.

Aliyu assured that any officer found responsible would face appropriate disciplinary measures and legal action in accordance with the law.

The police commissioner also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.

The Command further appealed to members of the public with relevant information that could aid the investigation to come forward, assuring that the probe would be conducted thoroughly and transparently.
