Bayelsa State Police Command has taken swift action after a video showing officers assaulting a tricycle (keke) rider went viral on social media.
In the footage, the rider could be heard pleading with the officers, promising to “bring the money,” as one officer threatened to punch him and shoved him to the ground.
The officers were seen forcing the rider into a nearby bush, where he was repeatedly beaten, stomped on with boots, and struck with a tyre before they left the scene.
After the incident, the visibly injured rider explained to nearby residents that he had informed the officers that he was unwell and had no money to pay.
A voice off-camera suggested the assault might have been linked to issues with his driver’s licence, and the rider alleged that some items, including tyres, were removed from his tricycle during the attack.
Reacting to the viral video, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, confirmed on Saturday that the command had taken the matter seriously.
“The attention of the Bayelsa State Police Command has been drawn to a viral video allegedly showing Police officers assaulting a tricycle driver. The Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, has condemned the act in strong terms, describing it as unacceptable and contrary to professional policing standards,” the statement read.

The command emphasized that the officers involved have been arrested and that disciplinary proceedings have commenced in line with the provisions of the Police Act and other regulations.
CP Edebor also assured the public that the command remains committed to protecting the rights and safety of all citizens while maintaining lawful and professional policing across the state.
The Bayelsa Police urged residents to remain calm and continue supporting efforts to maintain peace and order in the state.
