Bayelsa Strikes $3m Deal with Jampur Group for Solar, Smart Meter

Bayelsa State has sealed a $3 million investment agreement with Jampur Group to establish three new factories that will boost power access and agricultural production in the state.

The landmark deal, signed at the Government House in Yenagoa on Thursday, covers the construction of a solar panel production plant, a smart electricity meter manufacturing factory, and a fertiliser blending plant.

Governor Douye Diri, who announced the partnership, described Jampur as a trusted conglomerate with proven records both in Nigeria and abroad.

He said the project would not only serve Bayelsa but also benefit the Niger Delta, Nigeria, and even the Gulf of Guinea.

“This is a delight because what we have been searching for is finally here,” Diri said. “Nigerians have been travelling abroad in search of solar panels and smart meters, but very soon, they will be produced here in Bayelsa. And it comes at no cost to the government—we are simply providing the enabling environment.”

The governor explained that the introduction of smart meters would reduce recurring clashes between electricity consumers and suppliers, as defaulters would be automatically disconnected.

He added that Bayelsa youths would be trained and actively engaged in the projects to give them a strong footing in the power sector.

Highlighting Jampur’s track record, Diri recalled that the company recently handled the supply and installation of the 60MW gas turbines procured by the state government.

Chairman of Jampur Group, Mohammed Shafiq, expressed excitement about the partnership, confirming that work on the metering plant would commence before the end of the year.

Bayelsa State Electricity Company’s Managing Director, Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, described the agreement as a milestone that aligns with the governor’s “Prosperity Agenda.”

The state’s Attorney General, Biriyai Dambo, signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on behalf of the Bayelsa Government, while Bello Abdulahi represented Jampur Group.

With this development, Bayelsa is positioning itself as a new hub for renewable energy technology and agricultural growth in the Niger Delta region.
