Bayelsa’s Transformation Lauded: Reps Speaker, Plateau Gov Hail Diri’s Leadership

…Diri demands higher oil derivation, says Bayelsa deserves more

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, received commendations from Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, as they inaugurated key projects as part of his fifth-anniversary celebrations.

Hon. Abbas commissioned the newly built Legislators’ Quarters in New Yenagoa City, describing the project as a testament to Diri’s commitment to delivering excellence.

“Your leadership style, magnanimity, inclusivity, and strong sense of purpose have set a standard worthy of emulation. These quarters symbolize the confidence Bayelsans have in your administration,” Abbas said.

Governor Diri emphasized that New Yenagoa City was a planned development, urging property developers to adhere to the city’s blueprint. He further directed the Ministry of Lands and Survey to acquire an additional 360 hectares for allocation to interested Bayelsans.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Moses Teibowei, noted that the project includes 30 units of duplexes—a five-bedroom unit for the Speaker and 29 four-bedroom units for legislators—executed by an indigenous firm on schedule.

Mutwang Lauds Bayelsa’s Progress, Donates N15m

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, while inaugurating the reconstructed Onuebum-Otuoke Road, praised Diri for driving remarkable transformation in Bayelsa.

“God did not make a mistake in making Diri the ‘Miracle Governor’ of Bayelsa. His leadership has brought visible progress to this state. I have been visiting Bayelsa since 1993, and I can attest to the tremendous changes over the years,” Mutfwang said.

He also donated N15 million to the Onuebum and Otuoke communities, as well as students of the Federal University, Otuoke.

Diri Renews Call for Increased Oil Derivation

Governor Diri restated his call for an increase in the 13% derivation fund allocated to oil-producing states, arguing that Bayelsa has the resources to develop but requires equitable revenue allocation.

“We are not asking for everything, but the Constitution states that 13% is the minimum. I urge our representatives in the National Assembly to push for a review,” he said.

He also praised the federal government’s tax reform bill, calling for its extension to oil and gas revenues, stating:

“With increased derivation, we won’t be constructing a single-lane road to Otuoke or Brass but dual lanes.”

Diri said the Onuebum-Otuoke Road was a priority due to its importance to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s community, students, and residents, especially during flooding.

Community, Students Hail Diri’s Projects

Otuoke community leaders, represented by Chief Elliot Osomu, expressed gratitude for the road’s elevation above flood level and the transformation of Dame Patience Jonathan Square.
