Former Big Brother Naija housemate Bella Okagbue has broken her silence on her reported breakup with fellow reality television star, Segun Olusemo, popularly known as Sheggz.
Bella spoke publicly about the relationship for the first time on Friday through a series of posts on her Instagram Story, following days of public discussions and competing narratives surrounding the end of their relationship.
The reality star explained that she had deliberately remained silent because she believed certain aspects of her relationship deserved to remain private, stressing that her decision not to respond publicly should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing.
“For the past few days, I have watched people tell my story for me. I stayed silent because I believed some things deserved to remain private, but my silence should never be mistaken for guilt,” she wrote.
Bella said she genuinely loved Sheggz and defended their relationship because she believed in it at the time.
According to her, she also chose to give him another chance because she believed people could change and grow.
“I loved genuinely. I defended the relationship because I believed in it at the time, and I chose to give someone I loved a second chance because I believe people can grow and change,” she said.
She, however, noted that believing in someone’s ability to change did not mean she was obligated to wait indefinitely for that change.
“But believing in someone’s capacity to change does not obligate you to wait forever for that change,” she added.
Bella also suggested that the version of a person presented publicly could differ from the experience of those who know them privately.
“The person everyone experiences publicly isn’t always the person you experience privately,” she stated.
Addressing conversations surrounding marriage and the ring associated with her relationship with Sheggz, Bella rejected suggestions that her desire to marry him amounted to desperation.
She maintained that wanting marriage with someone she loved was a legitimate desire, while recognising when a relationship was no longer suitable for marriage was an act of wisdom.
“On marriage and the ring, let me be clear: wanting marriage with someone you love is not desperation. Knowing when not to marry them is discernment,” she wrote.
She further stressed that marriage or an engagement ring could not resolve fundamental problems within a relationship.
“A ring doesn’t fix what made a relationship impossible,” Bella said.
The reality star also reflected on the promises she said had been made throughout the relationship, suggesting that repeated unfulfilled commitments eventually influenced her decision to walk away.
“A hundred promises. Not one fulfilled,” she wrote.
Bella said she eventually stopped relying on promises and began paying attention to recurring behaviour.
“At some point, you stop listening to promises and start paying attention to patterns,” she added.
She acknowledged that different versions of the events surrounding the breakup were circulating publicly but said some aspects of her personal experience remained undisclosed.
“There are versions of events circulating that do not reflect my experience, just as there are parts of my experience I have chosen not to discuss publicly yet,” she stated.
According to Bella, those undisclosed details remained hers to share whenever she considered the time appropriate.
She said she had given the relationship love, another opportunity and loyalty, but eventually reached a point where she could no longer maintain that loyalty at the expense of trust, respect and peace.
“I gave love a chance. I gave change a chance. I gave loyalty in abundance,” she said.
“But even loyalty has an expiry date when trust, respect and peace can no longer coexist with it.”
Bella said she did not regret choosing to give the relationship another chance, explaining that her decision at the time reflected what she genuinely believed.
She added that she now respected herself enough to recognise when another attempt at saving the relationship was no longer the right decision.
“I don’t regret being the woman who chose to try again. I respect the woman I am today enough to know when trying again is no longer the answer,” she wrote.
Concluding her statement, Bella said she had decided to prioritise herself and embrace a different path regardless of the consequences.
“So today, I choose myself. I choose differently, regardless of what comes with it,” she said.
Bella and Sheggz met during the 2022 edition of Big Brother Naija, where their relationship became one of the most closely followed romances of the season.
The pair continued their relationship outside the reality show and frequently shared moments of their lives with fans, with their relationship later becoming a major subject of public interest.
Their reported separation has since generated widespread reactions across social media, with fans and followers offering different accounts and opinions about what may have led to the breakup.
Bella’s latest statement marks her most direct public response to the situation, although she made it clear that she had chosen not to disclose every detail of what transpired between them.
