Major-General Fawzi al-Mansouri, military intelligence chief for forces aligned with eastern Libya’s Libyan National Army, was killed on Monday, August 10, when an explosive device detonated in his vehicle in Benghazi.
The blast occurred in the Hawari district as al-Mansouri was entering his car outside his home, according to security sources.
Eastern Libya’s Prime Minister, Osama Saad Hammad, condemned the killing and vowed to establish the circumstances behind it, warning that those involved in assassination or terrorism would be held accountable.
“We condemn, in the strongest terms, this treacherous terrorist act,” he said in a statement on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

Al-Mansouri was appointed head of military intelligence by Khalifa Haftar in May 2024, after serving as commander of the Sabha Military Zone from August 2021. Haftar’s forces control large parts of eastern and southern Libya.
The assassination comes amid Libya’s prolonged political division, which followed the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.
Rival authorities have controlled the country’s east and west, while a 2020 ceasefire ended major fighting without resolving the underlying political dispute.
Haftar’s forces back the eastern administration in Benghazi, while the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity controls much of western Libya.
Authorities had yet to announce arrests or disclose a motive for the killing as of the time of filing this report
