Benue Assembly Extends Ex-Speaker’s Suspension by Six Months

The Benue State House of Assembly has prolonged the suspension of former Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh by six months, citing continued misconduct and attempts to destabilise the current House leadership.

The decision, taken on Tuesday, November 25, followed a motion presented by Mr Terna Shimawua (APC/Kyan) titled “Motion to Review the Suspension of Hyacinth Dajoh (Gboko West State Constituency) from Legislative Duties.”

First Daily recalls that Dajoh was initially suspended for three months on August 26 after he allegedly sought to orchestrate the impeachment of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Shimawua explained that Dajoh had not shown any remorse or offered an apology since the initial disciplinary action.

He further claimed that during the suspension, Dajoh collaborated with former Majority Leader Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa) and former Minority Leader Michael Audu (PDP/Adoka-Ugboju) to plot against the current Speaker, Alfred Emberga.

“The conduct of Dajoh does not reflect the expectations of a former speaker who should lead by example,” Shimawua stated.

The motion received unanimous support from members and was seconded by Mr Simon Gabo (APC/Mata).

Speaker Emberga stressed the importance of upholding the legislature’s integrity, noting, “Nobody is bigger than an institution.”

He added that when Dajoh’s suspension ends, he must submit a formal letter to the Speaker’s office, express genuine remorse, and apologise before returning to legislative duties.

The new six-month suspension officially commenced on November 25, signalling the Assembly’s resolve to maintain discipline and prevent further internal conflicts.
