Tragedy struck in Cross River State on Saturday, May 3, 2025, as four seminarians from the Enugu Catholic Church lost their lives in a bus accident near the Obudu Ranch Resort, a popular tourist destination in Obanlikwu Local Government Area.
The ill-fated vehicle, carrying thirteen occupants, including a supervising Reverend Father, reportedly suffered a brake failure while descending the treacherous Bottom Hill area at Ikwete village shortly after the group concluded a sightseeing tour of the resort.
Eyewitnesses say the vehicle plunged into a deep valley, killing four seminarians instantly and leaving nine others injured. The wounded are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Obudu.
Confirming the incident, Governor Bassey Edet Otu expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public that the state government is reaching out to provide support. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nsa Gill, the governor described the accident as a heartbreaking loss and commended the swift intervention of emergency responders.
“It is with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the tragic accident that occurred at Ikwette community by Obudu Ranch Resort Bottom Hill on Saturday,” the governor said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims during this incredibly difficult time.”

The statement noted that personnel from the Nigerian Army and local emergency services at the Ranch responded promptly to the scene, providing crucial assistance to the victims.
Governor Otu emphasized the importance of visitor safety at the Obudu Ranch and promised a comprehensive review of existing safety protocols. He urged tourists and transport operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to observe all safety guidelines when accessing the resort’s challenging terrain.
“As we mourn the lives lost, we remain committed to preventing such tragedies in the future,” the statement read, adding that further updates will be communicated to the public as investigations continue.
The Obudu Ranch Resort, known for its picturesque views and cool climate, has drawn visitors from across the country for years. Saturday’s tragic incident has cast a somber shadow over the resort, prompting renewed calls for improved transport infrastructure and safety measures in the area.
