The Nigerian government has put foreigners on notice. Anyone with an expired visa has exactly three months to leave the country. The Nigeria Immigration Service made this clear in a fresh directive released on Friday, the 2nd of May, 2025.
Signed by Public Relations Officer Akinsola Akinlabi, the statement came with a strict warning: overstaying will now cost violators “$15, plus bans of up to five years or permanent blacklisting” a policy set to kick in by September 2025.
“A 3-month grace period allows foreigners with expired visas to exit Nigeria without penalty, ending August 1st, 2025,” the statement added.

The NIS also rolled out new travel requirements.
Inbound foreigners must now fill out an online landing card.
Those exiting Nigeria must also complete a digital exit card. Both are available at: lecard.immigration.gov.ng.
