Nineteen-year-old Marcus Fakana has died in a car crash in Tottenham, North London, barely three months after returning from prison in Dubai, where he served time for engaging in a relationship with a 17-year-old British girl during a holiday.
Metropolitan Police said the accident happened shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday, October 3, when officers attempted to stop a vehicle in which Fakana was travelling as a passenger.
The car later collided with another vehicle on The Roundway. Fakana was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but was pronounced dead soon after.
The 19-year-old driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police and dangerous driving. Investigations are ongoing.
Fakana’s case had drawn international attention in 2024 when a Dubai court sentenced him to one year in prison under the United Arab Emirates’ laws, which criminalise sexual relations with minors under 18.
Although both parties were British nationals, the offence was prosecuted under local statutes.

He was released in July 2025 after receiving a royal pardon from Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as part of a mass amnesty issued to mark Eid al-Adha.
Radha Stirling, head of advocacy group Detained in Dubai, described Fakana’s death as “heartbreaking,” noting that he had only just begun rebuilding his life after his release.
Fakana’s family has requested privacy as police continue their inquiries into the circumstances of the crash.
