As part of its commitment to advancing medical education in Nigeria, the Abdul Samad Rabiu (ASR) Africa Initiative has commenced the construction of a ₦500 million state-of-the-art medical laboratory at Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The ASR Initiative, founded by Nigerian billionaire and philanthropist Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu, aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and educational institutions across the country. The groundbreaking ceremony for the 3D medical laboratory building took place on Wednesday.

Why Crescent University?

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of ASR Africa Initiative, Dr. Udoh Ubong, explained that the university was selected due to its outstanding academic performance and high-quality graduates.

“The laboratory is part of Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu’s commitment to improving education in Nigeria. When completed, it will enhance the training of medical and nursing students, equipping them to become exceptional healthcare professionals,” Ubong stated.

He noted that the project would be completed within six months, emphasizing that ASR Africa only provides grants between ₦250 million and ₦1 billion to institutions with a track record of excellence in national exams such as ICAN.

ASR Africa’s Commitment to Education

Ubong highlighted the Tertiary Education Grant Scheme, through which ASR Africa supports both private and public universities that meet specific performance criteria.

“These grants, ranging from ₦250 million to ₦1 billion, help institutions address critical educational challenges. Universities apply, and we assess their needs based on impact, gender inclusivity, and social benefits before implementing the projects,” he explained.

He also noted that several institutions, including the Federal College of Education (FCE), have benefited from similar grants, adding that Crescent University’s 100% pass rate in nursing and other professional exams made it a deserving recipient.

Crescent University Grateful for Support

The Vice-Chancellor of Crescent University, Prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila, expressed deep appreciation to ASR Africa for the generous donation, noting that the new medical laboratory would significantly enhance the university’s medical programs.

“We are extremely proud of our students, especially in the medical and nursing fields. Many have already excelled in public examinations, proving their competence,” he said.
