Build ‘Hall of Shame’ to Name Nigeria’s Worst Leaders — Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has proposed the establishment of two symbolic buildings in Abuja to serve as a “Hall of Shame” for individuals who contributed to Nigeria’s socio-political and economic decline.

Speaking at an official book launch, Jonathan expressed frustration over the legacy of bad governance and systemic failure, suggesting that future generations should be made aware of the roles their forebears played in damaging the nation.

“Maybe one day we will have two big buildings in Abuja where we will have places to display pictures of people, even if they are dead, and say, ‘These are the people who really messed up this country,’ so that their grandchildren will come to know that their grandfathers were part of the problems of this country,” Jonathan stated.

His comments sparked wide online reactions, resonating with citizens weary of the country’s recurring cycles of corruption, poor governance, and unaccountability.

While Jonathan did not name any individuals or administrations, his statement is widely interpreted as a call for collective national introspection and the need for accountability—both in life and in historical memory.

The former president’s remarks come at a time when public discourse around corruption and governance continues to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape. His speech is likely to intensify conversations about how leaders are remembered and the importance of preserving historical truths to guide future generations.

Political observers have noted that such a move, if implemented, could serve as both a deterrent to corrupt practices and a tool for civic education.
