By-election: Abure Accuses Obi of Desperation for Presidency

Factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has taken a swipe at the party’s 2023 presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi, saying he is “too desperate” to become Nigeria’s president.

In a statement he personally signed on Thursday, the 14th of August, 2025, Abure alleged that Obi was behind the lingering crisis in the Labour Party.

He claimed Obi’s push to “control the soul of the party” had made him act irrationally, adding that the former Anambra governor betrayed the goodwill he enjoyed from the party’s leadership.

“This is why we have maintained that Peter Obi lacks the competence, character and capacity to actualise the vision of a new Nigeria. Nigerians should not forget in a hurry that it was Peter Obi that created the crisis in the Labour Party which he is now citing as a reason why people should not vote for the party,” Abure stated.

The remarks came in reaction to Obi’s instructions ahead of the August 16 by-elections.

First Daily recalls that Obi had urged his supporters to vote for African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidates in the upcoming polls in some states.
