Nigeria’s Samson Adamu has been appointed Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football, marking a historic milestone for the country in continental football administration.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the influential role since CAF was established more than 70 years ago.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Communications of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire.
He disclosed that Adamu takes over from Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who stepped down to contest the presidential election of his country’s football federation, Fédération Congolaise de Football Association.

Olajire noted that before his elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in the organisation of several major continental competitions.
His nomination was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and subsequently ratified by the Congress during its meeting held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Cairo.
Adamu’s appointment is widely seen as a significant step for Nigerian representation in African football governance, further strengthening the country’s influence within the continent’s football hierarchy.
