The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna has strongly rejected former governor Nasir El-Rufai’s claim that Christians make up less than 25 percent of the state’s population.
The state chairman of CAN, Rev Caleb Ma’aji Bawa, issued a statement on Monday, September 1, dismissing the assertion as false and inconsistent with verified records from the Nigerian National Population Commission.
He said, “As the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Kaduna State Chapter, I am outraged by Mr El-Rufai’s claims, which are not only a gross misrepresentation of facts but also a manifestation of deep-seated animosity towards the Christian community in Kaduna State.”

Bawa also rejected El-Rufai’s allegation that Christian leaders in Kaduna receive $20,000 for medical trips abroad, describing it as a deliberate attempt to tarnish their image.
According to him, “We take umbrage with Mr. El-Rufai’s disparaging remarks, which insult the dignity and integrity of the Christian community in Kaduna State.
“His comments betray a lack of respect and understanding for the significant contributions Christians have made to the state’s development.”
The CAN chairman further demanded an immediate and clear apology from El-Rufai, insisting that he retract his remarks and show genuine commitment to fostering peace and interfaith unity in Kaduna.
