CBN, Bankers Committee take over National Theatre

…plan to create one million jobs from project in five years

Federal Government on Sunday handed over the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, to the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers Committee for rehabilitation.

The National Theatre was constructed in 1976 ahead of the 1977 Wold Festival of Arts and Culture event hosted by Nigeria in Lagos.

While taking over the 44-year-old facility, Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, said the bankers planned to create about one million jobs from the project in the next five years.

Dignitaries at the event included the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Following the completion of the renovation works at the National Theatre, along with the supporting facilities that would be built around it, which included a hotel and an expansive conference centre, the CBN governor said the banking sector intended to set up similar creative industries centres in Kano, Port Harcourt or Enugu.
