CDS Emphasises Strategic Importance of Lake Chad Recharge in Counterterrorism Fight

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has highlighted the critical role of recharging Lake Chad in enhancing Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations in the North East region.

During a reassessment visit to the Theatre Command of Operation Hadin Kai at the 7 Division, Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, General Musa stressed that the restoration of Lake Chad would significantly support military operations, particularly naval efforts, in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the area.

“We are looking forward to holding another meeting focused on clearing all obstacles in Lake Chad and recharging it. This is very important to our ongoing efforts against insecurity,” General Musa stated.

The Defence Chief emphasized that the lake is not only of strategic security importance but also has vital economic significance.

He noted that more than 50 million people across Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon depend on Lake Chad for their livelihoods, and its restoration could create employment opportunities for up to 20 million young people in the region.

General Musa’s comments come as the country grapples with renewed attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents, particularly in Borno and Yobe states.

The terrorist groups have intensified their assaults on military formations and civilian communities.

The CDS described these recent attacks as a temporary setback, attributed to heightened pressure on terrorist elements in the Sahel region, forcing them to shift focus to the porous borders of the Lake Chad Basin.

“What we are witnessing is an eclipse — a reaction to pressure on terrorist groups in the Sahel,” General Musa explained. “We are working diligently to address these challenges.”

He reassured Nigerians that the Armed Forces, in collaboration with other security agencies, are deploying new strategies and advanced weaponry to strengthen the ongoing counterterrorism campaign.

“I was in Borno three weeks ago with the ministers of defence and other service chiefs to assess the security situation. I returned now to reassess and consult with stakeholders. These recent attacks should not cause alarm; we are fully in control,” General Musa assured.

The CDS called on all citizens to rally behind the military’s efforts, reinforcing the message that national security is a collective responsibility. He urged every Nigerian to contribute to ensuring peace and stability in the country.

Security is a shared responsibility. Every Nigerian has a role to play in ensuring peace,” General Musa concluded.

As the military continues to tackle the insurgency, the potential restoration of Lake Chad remains a cornerstone of the country’s broader security and economic strategy.
