The Centre for Change has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, from Kuje Custodial Centre, describing his detention as a breach of constitutional rights and due process.
The group made the demand on Monday, June 22, 2026, in reaction to a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that same day which revoked Sowore’s bail and ordered his remand in custody.
Sowore was taken to Kuje Correctional Centre following the order. The case was adjourned to Wednesday, June 24, 2026, for hearing of an application challenging the bail revocation.
Earlier, Justice Mohammed Umar dismissed Sowore’s application seeking his recusal over alleged bias, allowing the trial to proceed before him.

The Department of State Services charged Sowore under the Cybercrime Act over alleged comments describing President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal,” allegations he denies.
In its statement on Monday, signed by President Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, the Centre for Change condemned the remand order and alleged that Sowore was subjected to “Gestapo-style” treatment by security operatives in court.
The group said Sowore did not breach bail conditions or attempt to flee, arguing that the case raises concerns over fairness and judicial impartiality. It also faulted the court for continuing proceedings despite a pending recusal request.
It demanded Sowore’s immediate release, withdrawal of the charges, and protection of constitutional rights to free expression and political participation.
Sowore, held at Kuje, said after the proceedings he was prepared for detention and described the case as part of a wider struggle for democratic accountability.
