Cholera Outbreak in Niger: 13 Dead, Scores Hospitalised

A cholera outbreak has led to the death of 13 people across six local government areas in Niger State, while 236 others have been hospitalised.

Findings revealed that the first cases were reported on Sunday in Shiroro Local Government Area, along with four other LGAs. By Wednesday, the 23rd of July, 2025, the waterborne disease was said to have claimed the lives of victims.

A healthcare official, who did not want to be named, shared that the areas with the most severe cases include Chanchaga, Bosso, Shiroro, Magama, Bida, and Munya Local Government councils.

According to the official, more than 239 individuals have been afflicted by the disease and are currently receiving medical attention in different primary healthcare centres within the impacted LGAs.

When asked about the situation, the state government confirmed its awareness and response, noting the activation of an isolation centre at the old wing of the late Senator Idris Ibrahim Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre along Old Airport Road, Minna.

Ibrahim Dangana, the Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, confirmed the outbreak and said a multi-sectoral approach has already been launched to control the spread within the six affected LGAs.

The commissioner added that treatment and isolation centres had been established in each of the affected local government areas with the aim of containing the spread.

He explained: “We have set up treatment and isolation centres to mitigate the epidemic, and are also embarking on aggressive sensitisation exercises.

“The campaign is now targeting religious bodies like CAN and Islamic bodies and the entire eight emirates of the state,” he continued.

Dangana praised Governor Mohammed Bago for his efforts and extended appreciation to donor agencies for their support.

Ibrahim Idris, Director of Public Health in the Ministry of Tertiary Healthcare, backed up the commissioner’s account, stating that Chanchaga, Bosso, and Shiroro local government areas were the worst-hit councils.
