The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has named Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist affiliated with the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its newly elected president.
Prof. Piwuna, who currently holds the position of Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Professor Victor Osodeke, a Soil Science academic from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State.
His emergence followed the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, which convened on Sunday, May 11, in Benin City.

The presidential race was contested between Piwuna and Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
Piwuna’s leadership begins during a period of mounting unrest in the university system. Concerns have been raised about the federal government’s distribution approach to the recently released Earned Academic Allowances.
Additionally, persistent issues such as academic brain drain continue to fuel speculation about potential industrial action.
