Civil Society Urges Tinubu Presidency to Probe Interior Minister Tunji‑Ojo’s Certificate Controversy

Pressure is mounting on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to investigate Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo over questions surrounding the authenticity of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate.

On October 21, 2025, a coalition of civil society organisations filed a petition calling for a comprehensive inquiry into Tunji‑Ojo’s certificate and compliance with NYSC regulations.

The groups described the allegations as “a matter of public integrity and constitutional accountability.”

The petitioners allege that Tunji‑Ojo was first mobilised for NYSC in 2006 but failed to complete his service.

In 2019, he was reportedly remobilised to fulfill the programme while simultaneously serving as a member of the House of Representatives, a dual role the petitioners argue violates constitutional provisions prohibiting public officers from holding multiple remunerated positions.

Concerns have also been raised over a discharge certificate issued in 2023, which the petitioners claim bears the signature of an NYSC Director‑General who was not in office at the time.

While the NYSC stated that the certificate issue was due to “a name omission during printing,” the civil society groups dismissed this explanation as “irregular and inconsistent with standard procedures.”

The petition outlined several key demands:

• Immediate suspension of Tunji‑Ojo from ministerial duties pending the outcome of investigations.

• Verification of the 2023 certificate by the NYSC, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

• A National Assembly-led inquiry into alleged dual remuneration during 2019–2020.

• Assurance that all public officials are subject to scrutiny, irrespective of political affiliations.

The League for Good Governance (LEGOG) reinforced the call for accountability, urging President Tinubu not to shield the minister, warning that inaction could erode public confidence in the government’s commitment to the rule of law.
