Commonwealth Games: Weightlifter Olarinoye wins Nigeria’s first gold medal

Nigerian weightlifter Adijat Olarinoye has won the county’s first gold medal on Saturday night at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Olarinoye who made her debut, lifted a combined weight of 203kg in the 55kg weightlifting event to clinch the gold medal and first overall medal for Nigeria.

The 23-year-old also set a Games Record and African Record in the process.

India’s Bindyarani Sorokhaibam, who also set a new Games record with 202kg won silver, while England’s Fraer Morrow claimed bronze after lifting a total of 198kg.

With the gold, Nigeria is placed ninth on the medals table as Australia tops the table with 13 gold, eight silver and 11 bronze medals.
