Condom Distribution Falls 55% in Nigeria, UNAIDS Warns of Major HIV Setback

Condom distribution in Nigeria dropped by 55 percent over the past year, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) reported on 25 November 2025.

The agency said the decline forms part of the most severe setback in the global HIV response in decades.

UNAIDS linked the fall to reduced international funding and the suspension of key services by community-led programmes that had supported nationwide condom distribution.

More than 60 percent of women-led organisations involved in HIV prevention reported suspending essential programmes due to funding shortfalls.

The agency warned that reduced condom access could increase the risk of new infections, particularly among young people and women, stressing that condoms remain one of the most cost-effective tools for HIV prevention.

Globally, subsidised condom procurement has fallen by about 30 percent since its peak in 2011, highlighting a broader crisis in prevention resources.

Nigeria now faces urgent pressure to restore funding and strengthen community programmes, or risk reversing decades of progress in HIV prevention.

UNAIDS called on governments and donors to prioritise prevention services, warning that without swift action, the fight against HIV could face long-term setbacks.
