UEFA has banned Turkey defender Merih Demiral for two European Championship games following his ‘wolf’ celebration in the Round of 16 match against Austria.
Demiral scored both of Turkey’s goals in a thrilling 2-1 victory, but his celebratory gesture, a ‘wolf’ salute, has led to disciplinary action. The ban means Demiral will miss Turkey’s next two fixtures in the tournament.
The controversial celebration drew criticism and was deemed inappropriate by UEFA, leading to the suspension.
This decision was reported by German publication BILD, which highlighted the strict measures UEFA is taking against unsportsmanlike conduct.
In a similar vein, England’s Jude Bellingham has been fined €20,000 by UEFA for his celebration during a match against Slovakia.
Bellingham’s actions were scrutinized after he was shown on television kissing his right hand before making a crotch-grabbing gesture.
Although Bellingham explained that the gesture was an inside joke directed at close friends in attendance and not aimed at the Slovakia bench, UEFA decided to impose a financial penalty.
According to BILD, Bellingham will escape any further punishment as it is challenging to determine the intended target of his gesture.
Despite the fine, he will remain eligible to play in England’s upcoming matches.
Both incidents underscore UEFA’s commitment to maintaining sportsmanship and respect on the field, as the organization continues to enforce strict guidelines to prevent inappropriate conduct during competitions.
