The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Akwa Ibom Command, has equipped five inmates with professional starter packs to support their reintegration into society and promote sustainable livelihoods after their release.
The command’s spokesperson, Richard Metong, announced the development in a statement on Friday in Uyo.
During the presentation ceremony at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, the Controller of the Command, Frank Okonkwo, reaffirmed the service’s commitment to rehabilitation as mandated by the NCoS Act, 2019. He described empowerment as a vital tool for reducing repeat offences and strengthening public safety.
According to him, providing inmates with relevant skills and tools transforms them into productive citizens capable of contributing positively to their communities.
“When inmates are trained and empowered, we are not just releasing individuals back into society, we are releasing skilled, productive citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to their communities. This is how we build a safer and better society,” Okonkwo said.

He added that the empowerment initiative, executed in collaboration with strategic partners, is part of ongoing efforts to enhance vocational and skills-acquisition programmes across the command.
The beneficiaries, who received training in hairdressing, tailoring and barbing, were also presented with starter kits to help them commence their trades immediately.
Metong noted that two of the beneficiaries have already regained freedom, while the remaining three are expected to be released between now and January 2026.
