In a major reshuffling of Nigeria’s academic hierarchy, Covenant University (CU) has claimed the title of Nigeria’s best university in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings, overtaking long-standing public institutions like the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Ibadan (UI).
The 2024 rankings highlight a growing trend where private institutions are challenging the dominance of public universities.
Covenant University’s rise to the top is a testament to the institution’s focus on research, teaching quality, and international collaborations, which played a key role in its leap ahead of the University of Ibadan, which now ranks second.
UNILAG, which previously enjoyed a top position, dropped to fourth place, while the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) and Bayero University, Kano, secured third and fifth positions, respectively.
The 2024 edition of THE Rankings evaluated 1,907 universities from 108 countries using 18 performance indicators. Covenant University’s remarkable performance in research citations, industry engagement, and global outlook was instrumental in securing the top spot, signaling a broader shift in the country’s higher education dynamics.
On the international scene, the University of Oxford continues its reign as the world’s top institution for the ninth year running, while Stanford University has moved up to second place, surpassing Harvard University, which dropped to fourth.
As Covenant University sets the pace in Nigeria, the shifting rankings raise important questions about the future of public universities in the country. The gap between private and public institutions may continue to widen unless traditional universities adapt to the increasing competition from newer, privately funded rivals.
