The Cross River State Government has cancelled the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon, citing escalating security concerns across the country.
Governor Bassey Otu announced the decision on Thursday in a statement released via his X handle, noting that the move followed a thorough assessment of the national security landscape.
He described the cancellation as necessary to protect the lives of athletes, spectators, organisers and tourists expected at the event.
“After reviewing the prevailing security situation across the country, I have directed the cancellation of the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon,” Otu said, adding that the choice was a difficult one given the excitement and preparation that the marathon generates annually. “However, the safety of our people, our athletes, and our visitors must always come first.”
He apologised to partners and participants for the disruption and assured that the marathon would return “stronger, safer, and better organised” in subsequent editions, with the full backing of the state government.
Otu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to showcasing Cross River as a bastion of peace, natural beauty, and tourism excellence.

He stressed that making responsible decisions in times of uncertainty was critical to safeguarding lives while promoting the state on the global stage.
The second edition of the marathon was originally scheduled for Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the picturesque Agbokim Waterfalls in Etung Local Government Area.
The 42km eco-tourism race was expected to draw competitors and enthusiasts from within and outside Nigeria.
The cancellation is one of several responses to worsening insecurity nationwide.
On November 18, gunmen attacked the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, killing at least two worshippers and abducting the pastor and several congregants during an evening service—one in a growing string of violent incidents that have heightened public safety concerns.
