The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has taken a swipe at the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, accusing him of sidelining opposition parties during his tenure.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, the 8th, of October, 2025, the CUPP National Secretary, Peter Ameh, said Yakubu failed to honour several commitments made to political parties before the 2023 general elections.
His comments came just a day after Yakubu officially vacated office and handed over to May Agbamuche, the oldest serving National Commissioner, who now serves as acting chairman.
“The conduct of the 2023 election leaves a bitter taste in our mouths under Mahmoud, and that is what he will be remembered for. He made promises that were not kept.

“Opposition parties suffered under Mahmoud. He was not accommodating when it comes to opposition or multi-party democracy. All he wanted was to crush it.
“Go to that place and see for yourself. The junior staff and all the staff are celebrating that Mahmoud has left.
“What you see was an elitist escort to protect him from the anger that was in the Commission. The high-handedness was much. There wasn’t any interaction or essence to build any capacity for staff,” Ameh stated.
