Customs Auctions 22,175 Litres Of Seized Petrol In Lagos

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has auctioned 22,175 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) seized from suspected smugglers along the Lagos-Ogun axis.

The auction was held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the Customs Training College, Ikeja, Lagos. The seized fuel and five means of conveyance had a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N32.1 million.

National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Deputy Comptroller Abubakar Aliyu, said the seizures followed actionable intelligence and were recorded at Imeko, Ilara, Ilaro, Idiroko and the Seme-Badagry corridor.

The fuel was contained in 887 jerry cans of 25 litres each.

Aliyu said the auction, ordered by Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, was conducted in line with approved procedures for disposing of seized petroleum products.

He said Operation Whirlwind had intensified surveillance and intelligence-led enforcement along routes vulnerable to the diversion and cross-border movement of PMS.

Aliyu said the measures were aimed at preventing the diversion of fuel meant for domestic consumption and protecting Nigeria’s economic interests.

He warned smugglers that Customs would sustain operations against illicit petroleum networks and urged border communities to report suspicious activities.

The latest auction follows a series of PMS seizures by Operation Whirlwind. In February 2026, Customs reported intercepting 40,750 litres of PMS in 1,630 jerry cans along the Owode Apa, Seme and Badagry corridor.

The Acting Commandant of the Customs Training College, Ikeja, Deputy Comptroller Patience Ita, warned that fuel smuggling, even on a small scale, could harm the national economy.

She urged those involved to desist from the practice.
