Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has concluded plans to dedicate one-third of his wealth to charitable causes as part of his long-term succession strategy, according to his daughter, Halima Dangote.
Halima, who serves as a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, disclosed the arrangement in an interview with Bloomberg, explaining that the billionaire industrialist has already secured the backing of his family to allocate 33 per cent of his estate to philanthropy.
With Dangote’s fortune currently estimated at $35.1 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the proposed donation would be worth approximately $11.7 billion, making it one of the largest philanthropic commitments ever announced by an African billionaire.
Speaking on the decision, Halima said her father considers giving back to society a cornerstone of his legacy, adding that the family’s succession plan is structured to ensure charitable work continues for generations.
She explained that Dangote had already transferred 25 per cent of his wealth to the Aliko Dangote Foundation, while Islamic inheritance principles permit him to dedicate up to one-third of his estate to humanitarian causes through his will.
According to her, Dangote personally requested that she, her two sisters and his mother sign the will approving the 33 per cent allocation to the foundation, describing philanthropy as a lifelong commitment that should outlive him.
She noted that the family believes its business success is closely tied to its culture of giving back, making philanthropy an integral part of the Dangote legacy.

Established in 1994, the Aliko Dangote Foundation has become one of Africa’s largest private charitable organisations. Halima revealed that the foundation was endowed with $1.25 billion about a decade ago and has since received an additional $700 million in funding.
She added that roughly 70 per cent of the foundation’s annual spending is invested in Nigeria, while 20 per cent supports development projects across Africa and the remainder funds humanitarian initiatives in other parts of the world.
The foundation focuses on health, education, nutrition and humanitarian assistance, and has partnered with organisations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as state governments in northern Nigeria, in efforts that contributed to the eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa.
Dangote’s latest philanthropic commitment comes as global attention increasingly turns to billionaire giving. Although the planned donation is below the 50 per cent benchmark associated with the Giving Pledge, it is expected to rank among the most significant charitable commitments by an African business leader.
Earlier this year, TIME magazine recognised Dangote among the world’s most influential philanthropists in its inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list, citing the Aliko Dangote Foundation’s annual spending of more than ₦50 billion on development programmes across Africa.
